Equation versus expression

What really is an expression?
Why are expression necessary?
What is an equation?
What is the difference between an equation and an expression?
Give an example in life where an expression is absolutely necessary.

  1. An expression is really a set of terms either being added or subtracted,etc. Without an equal sign being present.

  11. Is an expression just a worded version of an equation? Wouldn't they be the same thing then?

  12. In mathematics, the word expression is a term for any well-formed combination of mathematical symbols. For example,

    x2 + 3x − 4

    An equation is a mathematical statement, that shows two things are equivalent to something else. Equations are written with an equal sign, as in

    2 + 4x = 10

    you should be able to tell the difference right?

  13. simply put i think the main difference between the expression and equation is that the equation is different expressions linked my equal signs (=)...

  14. to examine equations and expressions:

    3x + 2 is an expression (no =).
    11 is also and expression.
    however 3x + 2= 11 is an equation (presence of=).
    as you can see the equation linked the two expressions. i think that thats wat the equations do...they link expressions that are equal in value. i also believe that to be called an equation there must be atleast one variable...im not sure if im right...and from the equation you can find the value of the variable.

    3x + 2 is equal in value to 11 since the unknown, x represents the number 3...
    this was found by solving the equation:

    3x + 2= 11
    3x = 11 - 2
    3x = 9
    x = 9/3
    x = 3
